Asset-Based Community Development
ABCD was developed in America and considers local assets as the primary building blocks of sustainable community development. Building on the skills of local residents, the power of local organisations, and the supportive functions of local institutions, Asset-Based Community Development draws upon existing community strengths to build stronger, more sustainable communities for the future.
Asset-Based Community Development Institute
A good resource for the principles of ABCD together with links to examples of where it has been used successfully can be seen below.
Asset-Based Community Development Toolkit
The ABCD Institute has developed a toolkit of resources that you can use to understand how ABCD works and how you could use it in your community.
Nurture Development is one of eleven strategic partners of the ABCD Institute, and the lead partner in Europe. They have worked as ABCD social explorers, trainers, mentors, facilitators, researchers and consultants with change partners and disruptive innovators around the world.
Community Asset Mapping
In order to use ABCD you need to know your assets. The guide below gives some examples of how to catalogue the assets of individuals and organisations in your community.
Still in development, the Grassroots Directory is a new format source book that will list some of the most innovative, practical and exciting community-led projects in the UK.
Grassroots Directory Street Map
To launch the project, a Grassroots Directory Street Map was created by illustrator Laura Barnard, to show how it works and fits together. This might give you ideas as to how your project could develop or work with and benefit from other projects, neighbourhood initiatives and groups to create even more impact.
